Summary Oversees the technical aspects of melting operations (EAF, AOD, AIM) and powder metallurgy production. Assists the commercial department in evaluating customer requests for toll melting services. Collaborates with Operations on melt sequencing and charge formulation. Monitors KPI’s and leads improvement initiatives with the goal of improving product consistency and reducing cost. Understands the product end use and material constraints, defines internal requirements necessary to safely produce the product while addressing customer technical concerns. Essential Functions - Follows all safety procedures, including use of personal protective equipment. Incorporates safety awareness when developing new operating procedures.
- Reports all accidents, near misses, equipment damage, etc. promptly.
- Follow and improve plant established good housekeeping policies and practices.
- Assures compliance with applicable industry standards and legal requirements where necessary.
- Defines Key process parameters, establish process capabilities and refine control methodologies.
- Evaluates customer supplied raw materials. Identifies appropriate melt practices and optimal schedule sequencing.
- Authors new melting procedures and modifications to existing procedures.
- Develops and implements cost reductions, product improvement, and process control initiatives.
- Reviews customer specifications for acceptance.
- Interfaces with sales personnel and customers to resolve any differential between customer requirements and production capabilities
- Interfaces with customers on quality complaints. Conducts root cause and corrective action analysis where appropriate.
- Assists raw material purchasing in evaluating incoming materials and revising purchase specifications.
- Train employees on basic metallurgy as needed.
- Serve as a Sarbanes Oxley auditor and complete respective documentation as required.
Qualifications Education and Experience - BS in Metallurgical Engineering, Material Science or Chemical Engineering
- Minimum of 5 years’ experience in EAF/AOD melting.
Competencies - Good working knowledge of metallurgical science, reactivity of elements, and melting operations.
- Background with EAF and Induction furnaces, and AOD processing.
- General understanding of quantitative analysis.
- Capable of hands on problem-solving, with ability to generate ideas and solutions.
- Establish good working relationships with leadership team, peers, production team, customers, vendors and contractors; team oriented.
- Strong communication skills in all forms including, written, oral, email, telephone, and presentation at all levels of the organization including to senior leadership.
- Maintain current knowledge and industry trends.
- A positive and determined approach to researching and analyzing new opportunities.
- Must be creative, detail oriented, possess a strong work ethic, be willing to learn and have a desire to succeed.
- Good working knowledge of all MS Office applications and internet applications.
