STS Aviation Services is hiring an experienced B2 Lead Mechanic to support complex avionics modification and production programs at our Birmingham facility. This is a senior, hands-on leadership role suited for an avionics professional who knows how to balance technical execution, team leadership, and program accountability in a live aircraft environment.
You will oversee and guide an established team of avionics technicians, acting as the focal point for all avionics activity on assigned programs. This role requires strong technical depth, calm leadership, and the ability to keep work moving safely, efficiently, and in line with agreed task card hours and timelines.
Key Duties & Responsibilities
- Oversee and supervise a team of experienced avionics technicians
- Lead by example to promote a safe, efficient, and accountable working culture
- Coordinate daily avionics tasks and support smooth program execution in consultation with stakeholders
- Act as the focal point for all avionics-related activity on the program
- Report progress, risks, and task card hour adherence to the Line Manager
- Perform wiring terminations and avionics testing
- Remove and install avionics shelves, panels, and equipment
- Interpret technical manuals, schematics, drawings, and regulatory requirements
- Support avionics system testing, validation, and troubleshooting
- Collaborate with engineering teams on avionics modifications and upgrades
- Work with internal and external stakeholders to align avionics solutions with operational needs
- Track allocated task card hours for avionics maintenance and modification activity
- Identify discrepancies between planned and actual labour hours
- Analyse root causes and escalate variances to maintenance managers, planners, and finance teams
- Recommend process improvements to optimise efficiency and resource allocation
- Support labour forecasting and project timeline planning
- Develop and deliver training for technicians, engineers, and operators
- Provide mentorship and technical guidance to junior avionics personnel
Skills and Abilities
- Completed an engineering apprenticeship, ideally in Aeronautical Engineering or military equivalent
- Minimum of 12 years aircraft experience
- Previous aircraft production experience
- Previous aircraft modification experience
- Prior supervisory or lead experience
- Military aircraft experience preferred
- Excellent knowledge of avionics systems
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications
- Eligible to work and live in the United Kingdom
- Subject to UK security vetting
MRP Part 145 Training Requirements
- Initial and continuation Human Factors training
- Initial and continuation SFAR Phase 1 and Phase 2 training
- Initial and continuation EWIS Group 1 and Group 2 training, including EWIS Group 1 Module G
- ETOPS
- RVSM
