MISSION:
Fosters, directly and indirectly, by action, example and training, comprehensive safety and environmental programs. Monitors potential health, safety, and environmental conditions of the workplace; identifies problems, recommends solutions, and ensures that the on-going safety and environmental systems are corrected to incorporate the changes. Monitors environmental compliance in the workplace, including hazardous waste management, air quality, wastewater and storm water, special waste management, and toxic use and waste minimalization.
PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:
- Participates in the development of Division-wide safety and environmental goals and objectives. Develops recommendations for improvement of safety procedures, practices and activities that support these goals and objectives.
- Actively champions a safe mindset. Directs and tracks plant 6S initiatives. Provides technical training on observing unsafe acts to management and supervision and monitors training effectiveness. Discusses complaints and suggestions received in writing relating to safety and environmental conditions with the affected supervision.
- Develops and implements, through supervisors and managers, an effective safety performance tracking and measurement system. Collaborates on a scheduled basis with management/departments to interpret the results and effect the corrective actions.
- Provides supervision and safety committees with safety procedures, manuals, directives, and other required information relative to safety. Serves as internal facilitator in using these tools to achieve the desired safety goals and objectives.
- Keeps abreast with technical developments, including OSHA, DEQ, and EPA related regulations that affect the safety and environmental considerations for operations. Incorporates updates into existing operations, where applicable.
- Participates in the root cause analysis of all safety and environmental incidents. Responsible for effective operations record keeping and OSHA, DEQ, and EPA document compliance. Completes required regulatory reports and participates in audits and inspections.
- Assists departments and the Environmental Health & Safety Manager to implementation of hazardous waste management program for a large quantity generator to include regular inspections, employee training, preparedness, prevention and contingency plan requirements, universal and hazardous waste determinations, storage, management and shipping, and associated recordkeeping and reporting requirements. Will lead or participate in annual comprehensive hazardous waste training on large quantity generator requirements.
- Responsible for the implementation of hazardous waste management program for large quantity generator to include regular inspections, comprehensive employee training, hazardous waste handling and management.
- Engages employees by enhancing the safety committee and maintains an effective local publicity program.
- Serves as a member/advisor of operations safety committee for special duties and surveys.
- Consults with Engineering and Maintenance departments on all plans and specifications for new or proposed changes in process, equipment, or methods and reviews for compliance with safety and environmental standards before acceptance or use.
- Works with claims administrators and third parties. Collaborates with supervision in the administration of the Light Duty Work Program and in the assignment of eligible employees in accordance with established practices.
- Collaborates with Engineering and Maintenance departments regarding outside contractors’ safety requirements.
- Maintains knowledge of all safety programs, manuals, rules, and regulations and in proper communication of such programs, rules and regulations.
- Designs and develops various motivational safety training programs for managerial and hourly personnel.
- Assists and advises supervisory staff in proper administration of all corporate, division, and local programs, including, but not limited to job procedure, change management, basic training, new and transfer job orientation, safety observation, accident investigation, physical conditions and inspections, and safety and environmental audits.
- Discusses complaints and suggestions received in writing relating to safety and environmental conditions with the affected supervision.
- By observation of physical conditions and work practices, detects lack of conformity with the Loss Control Program and follows up with the appropriate supervisor.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Daily production environment exposure which includes noise, dust, moving machinery, forklifts, and fluctuations in temperature. Outdoor work may be required under any possible weather condition.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Ability to stand and walk within the manufacturing facility. Ability to communicate, write, type, use and operate office and department/s equipment. Ability to exert up to 35 pounds of force to move objects. Ability to work in conditions which may include exposure to noise, dust, chemicals, and varying temperatures.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience, 2 years of applied safety and/or environmental experience preferred.
- Proven ability to communicate effectively with both internal and external customers.
- Proven ability to accomplish results in a collaborative environment.
- Strong organization skills; must be able to effectively handle multiple projects and tasks.
- Strong knowledge of MS Office applications.
